Mikhail Gorbachev was the leader of the Soviet Union between 1985 and 1991.

Mikhail Gorbachev is renowned for his programme of social and economic reform where he decentralised the oppressive system he inherited. He introduced perestroika (governmental restructuring) and glasnost (political openness) to a world that had shifted radically due to his extraordinary and unprecedented actions.

Awards
Gorbachev received the 1990 Nobel Peace Prize, the Order of Lenin, the Red Banner of Labour, and the Badge of Honour. He has received numerous other awards and honours.
